Gender Equity and Women in Fisheries

The conference with theme Defining Agenda and Action for Women Advancement and Gender Equity in Fisheries will be participated by NGOs, People's Organizations, development and academic institutions, and social scientists around the Globe.

Organized by the Southeast Asia Fish for Justice Network, SEAFish is a fisheries network composed of 15 non-government and fishers organizations in the Southeast Asia region, envisions equity in access to and control over off-shore, coastal and inland aquatic natural resources including the termination of suffering caused by unsustainable resources and/or privatized control over public resources rents.

SEAFish recognizes meeting gender equity goals in small scale fisheries and aquaculture as is set forth in its principles. It believes in adopting a gender responsive framework parallel to sustainable fisheries development and advocating women's rights in its gender analysis of the fisheries sector. The women in fisheries conference has also envisioned CEDAW (Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women), that SEA countries (including Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Philippines) ratified and implemented.

SEAFish Members are bound and being guided by its principles of unity known as "SEAFish Pool of Consensus". One major agreement was to develop and advocate for the Agenda of Women in Fisheries in the Southeast Asia. Our work in this mandate started with country researches for purposes of digging into the roots of the issues concerning women in fisheries and flesh out community agenda from the ground. All of the country experiences will be the highlight of the forthcoming Regional Conference of Women in Fisheries this December 2 - 5, 2008 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
